There are five major ocean-wide gyres—the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, and Indian Ocean gyres. Surface Currents in the Atlantic Ocean. The South Atlantic Current (SAC, McCartney ) is distinct from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, and is the southern branch of the subtropical gyre in the South Atlantic.

The eastward flowing SAC with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current is also known as the West Wind Drift. Gyres are large rotating current systems in the ocean. The motion of gyres is determined by the direction of the prevailing winds and the influence of the Coriolis effect.
